Livingston County Democrats have passed a resolution thanking the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners for its resolution opposing a plan to keep track of undocumented immigrants in Livingston County.
The resolution, adopted at the party’s Nov. 16 convention, refers to a resolution from Washtenaw County strongly opposing the Livingston County plan to have the sheriff’s office keep track of all interactions with undocumented immigrants.
The Washtenaw resolution said that would promote racial profiling and stereotyping as well as spread false information.
The Washtenaw board sent a copy of its resolution to Livingston County. Although the county board routinely accepts correspondence from other counties, it refused to accept the Washtenaw correspondence at its Oct. 28 meeting.
The Livingston Dems’ resolution notes that snub and states that “the Livingston County Democratic Party gratefully accepts the resolution on behalf of fair-minded Livingston County residents and thanks Washtenaw County for its expression of solidarity with us.”
In other business at the Nov. 16 convention, delegates to the convention elected a slate of 37 people to serve on the county committee along with the 19 people who are automatically members due to their candidacy for county office or above in the November election.
A RESOLUTION THANKING THE WASHTENAW COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS FOR ITS OPPOSITION TO THE LIVINGSTON COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS POLICY TO MONITOR AND DOCUMENT CONTACTS BETWEEN UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS AND THE LIVINGSTON COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE
WHEREAS, Washtenaw County has stepped forward to oppose a resolution passed by Livingston County to monitor and document interactions between undocumented immigrants and its Sheriff’s Office, and
WHEREAS, the Livingston County Democratic Executive Committee strongly opposed Livingston County Resolution 2024-09-128 passed by the Livingston County Commission because it promotes racial profiling and stereotyping as well as spreading false information, and
WHEREAS, Livingston County Democrats believe that the rest of the state needs to know the extreme views of the Livingston County Commission and the Washtenaw County resolution aids that effort, and
WHEREAS the Livingston County Commission at its Oct. 28 meeting formally refused to receive and place on file, as is customary, the Washtenaw County Commissioners’ communication containing its Resolution #24-194,
NOW THEREFORE, LET IT BE RESOLVED that the Livingston County Democratic Party gratefully accepts the resolution on behalf of fair-minded Livingston County residents and thanks Washtenaw County for its expression of solidarity with us.
Let it further be resolved that the party chair be directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners.
